County Hall was built in 1898 to be the headquarters of West Riding County Council and served as such from 1898 until the County Council was abolished in 1974.
Administration under the West Riding County Council led to problems, as Greenfield came under the administration of Holmfirth for such things as the fire service, despite Holmfirth being significantly further away than Oldham.
