Its alternative name – The West Wall – is named after the West Wall in Jerusalem, Israel.
In 1847, the Great Hall of Berwick Castle had to be demolished to make way for the newly built station (the former West Wall of the castle still marks the boundary of the now-defunct station goods yard).
The Four Gospels fitted on the window of the west wall have inscriptions in honour of John James Murley and William Paget.
Built into the west wall of the nave is the head of a 13th-century grave slab, and in the chancel two freestanding crosses brought from Palestine after the First World War.
It had a projecting mehrab (niche), facing toward Mecca as in all mosques, in the centre of the west wall where the imam leads the prayers.
