The B-52's' goal was to craft an album that would return to the New Wave sound and atmosphere of their debut album while updating their signature sound with drum machines and synthesizers, a slight contrast to their previous 1982 EP Mesopotamia, produced by David Byrne of Talking Heads who was intent on broadening the band's sound.

A noteworthy user of the Whammy is Tom Morello, who with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave used the Whammy to create otherwise impossible effects.
And to help ensure the sound that Matt Heafy wanted he had his custom USA Dean Matt Heafy “MKH86” installed in the bridge pickup position and a USA “Nostalgia” in the neck pickup position (Matt Heafy and Dean designed the custom USA Dean Matt Heafy “MKH86” when they were making the guitar) The bridge consists of an Original Locking Floyd Rose Tremolo System, and to help with keeping the strings in tune when the tremolo or whammy bar is used he had Grover tuners and a locking nut installed.

The B-52's 1979–1989 is a video tape compilation of seven music videos by The B-52's for their albums The B-52's, Whammy!, Bouncing Off the Satellites and Cosmic Thing; as well as one music video from Fred Schneider's first solo album entitled Fred Schneider & the Shake Society.
