Born in Clarksville, Ohio, McKechnie studied for two years at Wilmington College, Wilmington, Ohio, (1880-82) before entering Princeton University (AB, 1886), which he followed with two years at the Columbia School of Mines, New York City.
He was a Director of the Criminal Justice Program at Wilmington College in New Castle, Delaware from 1970 to 1972.
Hairston is now the coach at Wilmington College, which plays in the Ohio Athletic Conference (the same conference as Ohio Northern).
