6 unusual facts about Yamato province


Emperor Go-Murakami

In 1348, Kō no Moronao attacked Yoshino, and the Emperor left for modern-day Nishiyoshino Village in Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, which was then Yamato Province.

Emperor Kinmei

He established his court at Shikishima no Kanazashi Palace (磯城嶋金刺宮) in Yamato.

Emperor Kōgon

Go-Daigo fled to Yoshino, in Yamato Province and continued to lay proper claim to the throne, establishing what would come to be known as the Southern Court.

Emperor Kōmyō

In the Shōhei Reunification, Kōmyō and his companions were placed under house arrest in Yamato Province, in what is today the village of Nishiyoshino, Yoshino District, Nara.

Emperor Kōnin

Those two were together enclosed in a house in Yamato Province and died two years later in the same day, on the 27th day of the fourth month of Hōki 6 (in Julian Calendar, on May 29, 775).

Princess Ōku

After the death of her brother in 686, she returned from Ise to Yamato to enshrine his remains on Mt. Futakami, before a quiet end was put to her life at age 40.


Kan'ami

The troupe moved to Yamato and formed the Yuzaki theater company, which would eventually become the school of Noh theater.

Tsutsui clan

Throughout the time of the 16th century, the Tsutsui clan would mainly control the Yamato province, due to the efforts of the feudal lord (daimyo) Tsutsui Junkei.
