In 1981, the Zimbabwe Defence Force established a neutral zone in Beira and its import/export corridor.
The existing Rhodesian Army was combined with the two guerrilla armies; the 20,000-strong Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) forces of Zimbabwe African National Union-PF and the 15,000-strong Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) forces of PF-Zimbabwe African People's Union.

It was home to the late Dr Oliver Munyaradzi, Simon Muzenda, former vice president of Zimbabwe as well as Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Vitalis Zvinavashe (born September 27, 1943 in Gutu – died March 11, 2009) who was a Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and politician.
