4 unusual facts about Zvezda


Excalibur Almaz

An Almaz derived hull is still in use on the Zvezda ISS service module (DOS-8) in the Russian Orbital Segment of the International Space Station; Thus the Excalibur Almaz stations would be distantly related to the similarly sized Zvezda module of the ISS.

Proton-K

Thirty were launched in this configuration, with payloads including all of the Soviet Union's Salyut space stations, all Mir modules with the exception of the Docking Module, which was launched on the US Space Shuttle, and the Zarya and Zvezda modules of the International Space Station.

Sokol space suit

The current version of the suit is the Sokol-KV2, manufactured by NPP Zvezda (НПП Звезда).

It was planned that the crew of the British QinetiQ 1 high altitude balloon would wear modified Sokol suits purchased from Zvezda.

Davis Station

The Soviets did not stay for long but even today the Russian presence is betrayed by some distinctively Russian names on the map (Lakes Lebed, Zvezda and Druzhby among them) They later established their base at Mirny Station, some 350 km to the east of Davis.

The two pilots, Andy Elson and Colin Prescot, were to occupy an open deck, relying on Zvezda-manufactured Sokol space suits to keep them alive during the anticipated twelve-hour flight.

On 27 December 2013, an attempt was made to install the cameras on the Russian Zvezda module of the ISS, during a spacewalk by Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazansky, which also broke the record for the longest Russian spacewalk ever.
