After serving as a WWII navy aerial gunner in torpedo bombers, Muñoz next worked as a United States Merchant Marine radio officer, contentedly sailing on freighters, tankers, and passenger ships until, the world being what it was, he sailed for several years on munitions ships bound for duty in the wars in Korea and Vietnam.
He served on the ground, but became an air gunner in March 1943, and joined 207 Squadron at RAF Langar, near Nottingham, as a mid-upper turret gunner in the Lancaster bomber flown by Flying Officer Fred Richardson.
As an Air Gunner he was posted to No. 141 Squadron RAF to fly in Blenheims before the squadron converted to Defiants.
