Holmes supplied a series of yodels, and vocalised bird calls and train whistles on both "Lost Lover Blues" and "Wayward Girl Blues" (1928).

Subtitled Concerto for Birds and Orchestra it incorporates tape recordings of birdsong recorded near the Arctic Circle and on the bogs of Liminka in northern Finland.
He was inspired by Messiaen's use of birdsong and his unique harmonic ideas, as well as the musics of Bali and India.
