He served as Chairman of BFFS (British Field Sports Society) from 1994–1997 and was a member of the Public Affairs Committee (1980–1987) and is Vice President of the Great Bustard Group (2008-) which is re-introducing the Great Bustard to Great Britain.
The name of the city comes from a local type of bird, called dropie (English: Great Bustard).

The town is on the Ruta de Don Quijote and nearby tourist attractions include Libisosa (the remains of a Roman Town near Lezuza), Alcaraz which is a medieval town, Las Lagunas de Ruidera and the Sierra de Alcaraz (where eagles, vultures, great bustards, wild boar and lynxes live).
Highly endangered are Great and Little Bustards, Eurasian Stone-curlew, Lesser Kestrel, Montagu's Harrier and Dupont's Lark, as these species are directly threatened by changes in the steppe ecosystem.
