Tymshare was founded in 1964 as a time sharing company, selling computer time and software packages for users.

Community Memory

Launched in March 1990 and broadcasting from London, the channel initially broadcast for two hours each night from 8pm (GMT) on the Lifestyle transponder 5 on the Astra 1A satellite in analogue format (frequency 11.273 MHz, time-sharing with The Children's Channel, Lifestyle and The Lifestyle Satellite Jukebox).

LSS Data Systems

Ken Carlson, founder—before designing and developing LSS software, Carlson helped integrate the first commercial Cray-1 computer system into the time-sharing network of United Computing Systems, and built one of the first commercial TCP/IP networks as Vice President of the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute.

In 1963, their presence inspired a group of teachers at the University of Minnesota College of Education's laboratory school to introduce computers into classrooms via teleprinters and time-sharing.

The RSTS kernel could now be compiled under the RT-11 RTS, formatted as a SIL file with RT-11 SILUS, and copied to the system or other disks, while the computer was time-sharing.

University of Michigan Executive System

UMES was in use at the University of Michigan until 1967, when MTS was phased in to take advantage of the newer virtual memory time-sharing technology that became available on the IBM System/360 Model 67.
