The Brampton railway began in 1775 as a wooden wagonway from Tindale Fell Colliery to Brampton Coal Staithe constructed by the Earl of Carlisle.

In 1837 at the prompting of Matthias Schönerer, who was also heavily involved in the Budweis–Linz–Gmunden wagonway, he drew up plans for the repair shop of the Wien-Raaber railway (later Lokomotivfabrik der StEG), and in 1839 became entrusted with carrying them out, along with the mechanical engineer Kraft.

The Stratford and Moreton Tramway was a 16-mile (25-km) long horse-drawn wagonway from the canal basin at Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire to Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire, with a branch to Shipston-on-Stour.
