He has been honoured with the title of the Archon Actuary of the Holy in Christ Great Mother Church, by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople; the award of the Academy of Athens, in 1980; and with awards and prizes from churches, states and institutes.
It opened on 28 January 2000, and is adjacent to the National Library of Greece, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Academy of Athens.
He was married to Dr. Angeliki Laiou, a Harvard professor who was a scholar of Byzantine empire, and the second woman to be named a permanent member of the Academy of Athens since the organization was founded in 1926.
