After the death of Chlothar in 673, Theuderic III, his youngest brother, inherited his kingdoms, but a faction of prominent Burgundian nobles led by Saint Leodegar and Adalrich invited Childeric to become king in Neustria and Burgundy.

According to the Life of Germanus of Grandval, Adalrich "wickedly began oppressing the people in the vicinity Sornegau of the monastery and to allege that they had always been rebels against his predecessors."
He succeeded Gundoin as duke in Alsace and was himself succeeded by Adalrich, founder of the Etichonids.
The abbey was sited next to the Klosterwald ("monastery wood") in the village of Saint-Martin and was founded in 1000, in the reign of Emperor Otto III, by Count Werner of Ortenbourg, a descendant of the former ruling family of Alsace, the Etichonids, and of the family of the Eberhardines.
