Goethe's work is set around 1792 at the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars, when French forces under General Custine invaded and briefly occupied parts of the Palatinate.
In 1792 he was chosen a captain in a volunteer battalion, and served on the staff of General Custine.

Sent to Paris to justify himself, he was found guilty by the Revolutionary Tribunal of having intrigued with the enemies of the Republic, and guillotined on 28 August 1793.
His first campaign was that waged by General Custine against the retreating forces of the duke of Brunswick in 1792.
