His father Sir Lawrence Hyde was the second son of Lawrence Hyde of Gussage St. Michael, Dorset, who was third son of Robert Hyde of Norbury, Cheshire.

At the age of twelve (1610) he entered Winchester College as a scholar, and matriculated 17 November 1615 at New College, Oxford.

By the demise of his brother Lawrence he came into possession of the Heale estates in the Amesbury valley, and these, with his collection of heirlooms, he settled on the issue of his brother Alexander, Bishop of Salisbury.
