Having emigrated to the United States in 1951, Alexander was educated at Trinity School and Columbia University, where he earned a B.A. in Music.

When his father's health declined, Alexander assumed full responsibility for the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR)'s flagship choir, on Forgiveness Sunday in 1975.
