It won its first by-election with the election of candidate Alexander Moore in the electoral district of Cochrane in 1919 and achieved a coup when Conservative leader George Hoadley crossed the floor.

John Alexander Moore (born on June 27, 1915 in Charles Town, West Virginia; died May 26, 2002 in Riverside, California) was a noted American biologist in the field of amphibian studies.
