The Gissing family moved to Les Marécottes, near Salvan, in 1951, and remained there for the rest of Alfred Gissing's life.

They had three children, Michael, Charles William, and Jane, the last of whom became a British Olympic skier.
The writer Alfred Gissing,(1896-1975), son of George Gissing was fostered by Mr & Mrs Smith, of Treverva Farm from 1902 until he left school.
