Homer became Bristol Rovers' first full-time manager-secretary in 1899, a job he held for twenty-one years until 1920.
•
Homer's father, also called Alfred Homer, founded the Vulcan Brewery in Aston, Birmingham, in 1878.
He was signed by Rovers manager Alfred Homer in 1903 having played just a single game of League football, for West Bromwich Albion against Glossop North End in the Football League Second Division, but he immediately established himself as a regular in the Rovers' first team.
He was the longest-serving post-war manager of Rovers, and the second longest overall behind Alfred Homer.
