13 July – Allan Cunningham, botanist and explorer, best known for discovering the Darling Downs is born in Wimbledon, London.
The area was first named after the British statesmen, George Canning and Sir Robert Peel, by Allan Cunningham.
Gwydir was named for the Gwydir River (which in turn was named by the explorer Allan Cunningham after his patron Lord Gwydir, who took his title from Gwydir Castle in Wales).
The species was first formally described by botanist Allan Cunningham, his description published in Thomas Braidwood Wilson's Narrative of a Voyage Round the World in 1835.
Explorer Allan Cunningham crossed the river at Gravesend in 1827 and named it after his patron, Lord Gwydir, who took his title from Gwydir Castle in Wales.
According to Allan Cunningham it appeared from a sod of earth containing a Cephalotus, collected by Phillip Parker King from same location, and flowered to provide the source of the illustration by Franz Bauer.
In 1828 he received an honour when Mount Greville in Queensland was named in Greville's honour by a fellow botanist, Allan Cunningham.
