2 unusual facts about Antipope John XXIII

Antipope John XXIII

John did so with hesitation, at first trying to have the council held in Italy (rather than in a German Imperial City, as Sigismund wanted).

Initially he followed a military career, taking part in the Angevin-Neapolitan war.

Conciliarism

The Council of Constance (1414–1418) successfully ended the Schism by deposing two Popes (John XXIII and Benedict XIII) – the third Pope abdicated – and electing a successor in Martin V.

Robert Hallam

He played a leading part in the discussions leading to the deposition of Antipope John XXIII on 29 May 1415, but was less concerned with the trials of Jan Hus and Jerome of Prague.
