In 1991 he made an extended appearance on the TV discussion programme After Dark, chaired by Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, alongside Duncan Campbell, Jane Moore, Clare Short, Anthony Howard and others.
In August 1973, he was chosen to fight the byelection in Berwick-upon-Tweed caused by the resignation of Lord Lambton, and decided to focus on the issues of housing and prices.
