Aotea Square was site of a major civil disturbance on 7 December 1984, during a free end-of-academic year rock concert given by bands including Herbs and DD Smash.

In front of the Administration building is a 19th century bronze statue of George Eden, Lord Auckland, Governor of India, after whom the Auckland is named.
On 8 May 2006, the band released a Limited Edition copy of Love is the New Hate which came with a DVD of their 1 May 2005 performance in Aotea Square.
