At the Drive-In formed in 1994 with an initial lineup of Cedric Bixler-Zavala (lead vocals), Jim Ward (guitar and backing vocals), Jarrett Wrenn (guitar), Kenny Hopper (bass guitar), and Bernie Rincon (drums).

Rincon was replaced by Davy Simmons for their second EP, 1995's ¡Alfaro Vive, Carajo! Further lineup changes saw Wrenn replaced by Adam Amparan, Hopper by Omar Rodríguez-López, and Simmons by Ryan Sawyer.

The strength of their records coupled with a reputation for their energetic live performances led to tours with Samiam, Gameface, Grade, At the Drive-In, Shades Apart, The Dismemberment Plan and many others, helping Errortype:11 build a strong national and European fan base.
The Eugene Weekly compared some of their work to At the Drive-In, as well as Sleater-Kinney, and compared Henkensiefken's vocals to those of Alison Mosshart.
