Atmospheric railway

In 1799 George Medhurst of London discussed the idea of moving goods pneumatically through cast iron pipes, and in 1812 he proposed blowing passenger carriages through a tunnel.


Aircraft catapult

Like Brunel's Atmospheric Railway the tube of the catapult has a longitudinal valve covering the slot except where it is displaced to allow the connection to the internal piston to pass through.

Samuel Clegg

On his return to England railway works engaged his attention, but unfortunately he became involved with the atmospheric system of propulsion with the Samuda Brothers.

Starcross

A notable feature of Starcross is the Italianate pumping engine house, the best surviving building from Brunel's unsuccessful Atmospheric Railway.
