Thomas Lloyd-Mostyn, who also represented Flintshire in Parliament, predeceased his father.
The project was funded by the colliery owner, the current Lord Mostyn, and J. P. Eyton, and was known as the Bychan Embankment.
The first trial borings took place in 1865, under the direction of Lord Mostyn, owner of Mostyn Colliery, a few miles away.
