Former teammate Roy Sproson said that he was: "one of the best full-backs in the country. He was quick, had a good left foot and was particularly good going forward" and also displayed an "attacking flair".

He scored four goals in 44 league games for "Pompey" in 1958–59 and 1959–60, as Freddie Cox's team dropped out of the First Division and then only avoided a second successive relegation by two points in 1959–60.
During the 1960s and 70's the managers of the club lasted for about two years each: Reg Smith took over from Ronnie Rook followed by Basil Hayward in 1963, Ron Burgess 1965, Ron Heckman 1967, Alan Wright 1969, and Reg Smith again in 1971.
Bedford manager Basil Hayward took over as manager of Gillingham of the Football League Third Division in 1966 and recruited a number of players from his former club, including Folds, who joined the "Gills" as the club's first ever apprentice-professional.
In January 1966 he took over as caretaker manager after the resignation of Freddie Cox, and guided the team to two victories before stepping down upon the arrival of new manager Basil Hayward.
