It is historically named after the Scottish plantation owner in British Malaya, William Kellie Smith who is most famous for building Kellie's Castle in Batu Gajah.
In a May 9, 2007 Parliament session, Mohammad Said supported Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin, who made sexist remarks referencing menstruation against Fong Po Kuan, a female Batu Gajah MP from the Democratic Action Party.
A central workshop to be constructed in Batu Gajah is slated to replace the Sentul Works by August 2009, where the land it is situated on is earmarked for property development by YTL Land & Development, as part of the Sentul East and Sentul West master plan.
