2 unusual facts about Beam engine

Caledon, County Tyrone

The townland contains one Scheduled Historic Monument: a Beam engine (grid ref: H7581 4521).

Gunnies

After the accident, the only pumping engine on the site was not powerful enough to drain the mine and attempts at fund-raising to install a better one were unsuccessful, so the bodies of those who drowned were never recovered.

Phoenix Row

Opened in 1825, a stationary beam engine controlled the descent of wagons that ran from the colliery to the River Gaunless.
