On July 13, 1982, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Barbara Allen Rainey and her trainee Ensign Donald Bruce Knowlton were practicing touch-and-go landings at Middleton Field near Evergreen, Alabama, when the aircraft banked sharply, lost altitude, and crashed.

Joseph H. Rainey (1832-1877) was the first African American person to serve in the United States House of Representatives and the second black person to serve in the United States Congress.
Rainey obtained a bachelor's in English and psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, after which he served as an officer in the United States Navy.
He was reelected to the Sixty-sixth, Sixty-seventh, and Sixty-eighth Congresses and served from April 2, 1918, until his death in Chicago, Illinois, on May 4, 1923.

Rainey was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Charles Martin.
Rainey signed his works "Reni", a play on the name of Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni.
