Bernheim was founded in 1929 by Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, a German immigrant and successful brewer whose whiskey distillery business established the I.W. Harper brand.

Little is known about cultivation; the plant was introduced to the UK by the Longstock Park Nursery, NCCPG national collection holder, which received a specimen from the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, Kentucky.
