With funding from the Social Science Research Council, the Cambridge Group worked alongside amateur volunteers on local records, and established the journal Local Population Studies.
Under the stewardship of four successive presidents—David Featherman (1989–95), Kenneth Prewitt (1995–98), Orville Brim, Jr. (98–1999), and Craig Calhoun (1999–2012)—the SSRC closed down its area committees in favor of a reorganized international program with thematic, cross-regional, and cross-cultural components.

Presidential biographer James MacGregor Burns (1918-) has held two SSRC awards: a demobilization award in 1946-47, and a research training award in 1949.

She has served as chair of the Board on Testing and Assessment (BOTA) of the National Research Council, a recipient of an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) Visiting Fellowship.
In addition to the Dunning Prize, Simkins held research fellowships at the Social Science Research Council and the John Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, delivered the Fleming Lectures at LSU and the Centennial Lectures at the University of Mississippi.
He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Conciliation Resources, London, since 2013 and a member of the Advisory Board of the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum, Social Science Research Council, SSRC New York since 2008.
He has also had the CIEE Fulbright, Fulbright-Hays, Social Science Research Council, Will Rogers and the American Academic Research Institute in Iraq fellowships; he was the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow in Middle East Studies at Williams College in 1998-2000.
Prior to assuming this position, he directed the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Latin America and Caribbean Program at the Social Science Research Council and served on the faculty of Yale University’s Sociology Department.
After graduation, Ngai obtained postdoctoral fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the New York University School of Law, and, in 2003, the Radcliffe Institute.

A member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, he received his A.B. degree from Fisk University in 1931, and followed it with postgraduate study as a Social Science Research Council Fellow at the University of Chicago in 1931-1932.
He was President of the Ethnic, Race and Minority Relations section of the International Sociological Association 1990-94, and Director of the Social Science Research Council Research Unit on Ethnic Relations, 1970-78.
