After completing the pilot film for the series, producer Sam Katzman was able to convince former Dead End Kids Bobby Jordan and Leo Gorcey to join the series.
While pals Skinny (Donald Haines), Danny Graham (Bobby Jordan), Peewee (David Gorcey), Algy Reynolds (Eugene Francis), and Scruno (Sunshine Sammy Morrison) all work at the Reynolds Aviation Company, which is run by Algy's father (Herbert Rawlinson), Muggs (Leo Gorcey), the only one of the kids who refuses to work, spends his time flirting with an ambulance nurse named Helen (Joan Barclay).
After completing this film, Bobby Jordan left the Universal Dead End Kids/Little Tough Guys series, and signed on to Monogram Pictures to costar with fellow Dead End Kid Leo Gorcey in the East Side Kids series.
As a result, their usual roles were respectively taken over by Bobby Jordan and Norman Abbott.
In New York, the East Side youth gang, consisting of Muggs McGinnis (Leo Gorcey), Danny Collins (Bobby Jordan), Glimpy Stone (Huntz Hall), Scruno (Ernest Morrison), Skinny (Bill Lawrence), and Peewee (David Gorcey), are falsely arrested on the wharf because the truck they are playing in was stolen.
When Muggs (Leo Gorcey) refuses to train for the Golden Gloves match unless he has his own private camp in the country, Danny (Bobby Jordan) placates his pal by enlisting members of the Vassey Street Boys' Club in the Conservation Corps.
