He completed his studies with teachers including Boris Porena before taking a course in electronic music with the contemporary composer Domenico Guaccero.
From 1962 to 1964 he studied in Rome with Boris Porena privately and with Goffredo Petrassi at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia through grants awarded to him by the governments of Portugal and Italy.
Among his many disciples are Jesús Villa-Rojo, Luca Lombardi, Celestino Dionisi, Giuliano d'Angiolini, Derek Healey, James Clifford Brown, Claudio Pietro, Jorge (Manuel Rosado Marques) Peixinho, Armando Santiago, Oliver Wehlmann, Massimo Fornetti, Alessandro De Rosa and many more.
He also received a Master Degree in Music Composition at the Rome Music Academy where he was guided by the composer Boris Porena.
In 1961–1962 he took a year's leave to study with Boris Porena in Rome.
Lombardi studied composition initially with Armando Renzi and Roberto Lupi, later enrolling at the Pesaro Conservatory where he studied with Boris Porena, receiving his diploma in 1970.
