Following the provision of the deep-water port at Roscoff, the company commenced operations in January 1973 at the instigation of Alexis Gourvennec, when existing ferry companies showed reluctance in providing a service from Roscoff to Plymouth.

In the winter, during refit season, this route is used so that both MV Armorique and MV Bretagne can be moved between the Portsmouth to St Malo route and also the Plymouth to Roscoff route.

The company began sailings between Roscoff in Brittany and Plymouth in the South West of England using the freight ferry Kerisnel.

In 1986, Brittany Ferries introduced the Duc de Normandie, which operated a new route between the increasingly popular port of Portsmouth and Caen.
The Ferry Port in Zierbena (which is known to some as Bilbao Ferry Port) has two arrivals and departures per week of the MV Cap Finistère (for Brittany Ferries), the sailings have either come from Portsmouth (Portsmouth International Port) or are bound for Portsmouth (Portsmouth International Port).

The French press reported on March 23, 2012 that LD Lines have chartered the Barfleur from Brittany Ferries in partnership with DFDS Seaways for their Dover–Calais service where she will be put into service starting April 27 and renamed MS Deal Seaways.
The MV Armorique is a passenger and freight ferry built for Brittany Ferries by STX Europe in Finland at a cost of £81 million (€110 million).
Prior to being named the Pont-Aven was referred to as Bretagne 2, this was then the codename for the new Brittany Ferries vessel for Plymouth–Roscoff, the M/V Armorique.
In September 2010, Brittany Ferries announced that it would take over the Portsmouth-Bilbao route, with the MV Cap Finistère.
The dock was expanded in 2003 to accommodate Brittany Ferries' new 40,000 ton flagship Pont-Aven, and the terminal building was also renovated.
She was built at Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France and has been sailing for Brittany Ferries since 1989.
Pont-Aven's layout is similar in many respects to that of another Brittany Ferries vessel, M/V Bretagne.
