Early in his career at HUL, he did two stints as an Area Sales Manager, and worked in Brooke Bond and several skincare brands.
He also served on the Boards of various multinational and national companies in Pakistan as either a Director or Chairman including: United Bank Ltd, Eastern Federal Insurance, Brooke Bond, Pakistan Oxygen (now BOC Pakistan), Aspro-Nicholas (now Reckitt Benckiser), Organon Pakistan (part of AkzoNobel) and Pakistan Cables (BICC).
Bell was the voice behind the 1980s advertising campaign for Brooke Bond D, a brand of tea bag in the UK.
He was appointed Senior Company Doctor with the Brooke Bond Company (1984–1997), where he designed and implemented an award-winning reproduction health program.
In 1938 he was employed as an apprentice tea-taster by Brooke Bond in London, before returning to the family farm near Salisbury.

He subsequently became director and/or chairman of various companies, including travel company Thomas Cook, Midland Bank, tea company Brooke Bond, engineering firm John Brown, helicopter manufacturer Westland, Royal Insurance, Investors in Industry (later 3i), pharmaceutical company Glaxo, and Orion Publishing Group.
