Having acquired a knowledge of land management while working on one of the Buccleuch estates, he settled permanently at Blairquhan and began a long program of restoration and improvement to the castle and other buildings, and of the estate’s woodlands and grounds.

On 20 April 1663, she married, James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth (the illegitimate son of Charles II by his mistress, Lucy Walter) and she and her husband were created Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch on that day.
Lord Henry Douglas-Scott-Montagu, great-nephew of the 2nd Baron Montagu of Boughton, and second son of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch, inherited the Honour in 1845.
In the poem, Lady Margaret Scott of Buccleuch, the "Flower of Teviot" is beloved by Baron Henry of Cranstown an ally of the Ker Clan, but a deadly feud exists between the two border clans of Scott and Carr/Ker, which has resulted in the recent murder of Lady Margaret's father, Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch by the Kers on the High Street in Edinburgh.
Buccleuch died at in Bowhill, Selkirkshire, in April 1884, aged 77, and was succeeded by his eldest son, William.

Buccleuch was born at Dalkeith House, Midlothian, Scotland, the fifth child of seven, and second son of Charles Montagu-Scott, 4th Duke of Buccleuch, and the Honourable Harriet Katherine Townshend, daughter of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney and Elizabeth Powys.
Walter John Montagu Douglas Scott, 8th Duke of Buccleuch, 10th Duke of Queensberry, died on 4 October 1973 and was buried among the ruins of Melrose Abbey.
