The 148th Field Artillery was organized on 29 September 1917 by General Order 2, Headquarters 41st Division, trained at Camp Greene, North Carolina, Camp Mills, New York, and Camp Merritt, New Jersey.
The volunteers trained in Iowa and San Francisco at Camp Merritt near the Presidio, where a monument to the regiment still stands.
It was from this camp that thousands of soldiers, from Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri, were given basic training prior to being sent to Camp Mills, Mineola, Long Island, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; or Camp Merritt, Dumont, New Jersey, for disembarkation to France.

Camp Merritt, New Jersey, a U.S. military camp in eastern Bergen County, New Jersey, more specifically in modern day Cresskill, NJ, that was activated for use in World War I.
Formerly a racetrack, the camp, named for General Wesley Merritt commanding officer of the Philippine expeditionary forces and the Eighth Corps at the time, was located between Point Lobos Avenue (Geary) and Fulton Street between First (Arguello) and Sixth in San Francisco, California.
It was during this time that he went to France on a tour of observation and later accompanied the division to Camp Merritt, New Jersey.
