In 1933 in response to Adolf Hitler's rise to power in which he used the Jewish race as a scapegoat for Germany's worst problems, Catt organized the Protest Committee of Non-Jewish Women Against the Persecution of Jews in Germany.
Mills was a friend and respected associate of the leading suffragists of the day -- Lucy Stone, Susan B. Anthony, Carrie Chapman Catt and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Dame Louise Paget was the first recipient of the Medal of Honor of the Federation of Women's Clubs of New York City in 1917; other recipients included humanitarian Evelyn Smalley (1919), activist Carrie Chapman Catt (1922, decoration without the eagle), physicist Marie Curie (1929), Madame Chiang Kai-shek, First Lady of the Republic of China (1939), and Austrian-born pioneer atomic scientist Lisa Meitner (1949).
Anna Howard Shaw, Alice Stone Blackwell, Henry Browne Blackwell, Carrie Chapman Catt and others spoke in favor, while Lillie Devereux Blake, Clara B. Colby, and more spoke against it.
The organization's first President Carrie Chapman Catt also founded the League of Women Voters in the United States during her presidency.
