Its administrative and economic center of the region is Postojna, while other minor centers include Logatec, Cerknica, Pivka and Ilirska Bistrica.
Ivo Lah (also known as Ivan Lah; Štrukljeva Vas near Cerknica, Austria-Hungary, now Slovenia, September 5, 1896 – March 23, 1979, Ljubljana, SFR Yugoslavia, now Slovenia) was a Slovenian mathematician and actuary, best known for his discovery of the Lah numbers in 1955.
The largest settlement at the border of the lake is Cerknica, located north of the lake.
At the end of the 15th century, the castle was received as dowry by Boltežar the noble Wagen, imperial administrator of the castles of Hošperk by Planina and Šteberk in Cerknica, as well as lord of Kostel Castle near the river Kolpa.
