Cheung Chau had already been settled by people from other places in Southern China; for example, Hoklo, they are mainly fishing people; Hakka people; Chiu Chau; and Yue Ca.

Lee Lai Shan, a windsurfer, won Hong Kong's first Olympic gold medal in 1996.
One story of the origin of the festival is that in the 18th century the island of Cheung Chau was destroyed by a plague and infiltrated by pirates until local fishermen brought an image of the god Pak Tai to the island.
There are currently 78 fixed kai-to routes, mostly used to ferry passengers between the outlying islands of Lantau Island, Peng Chau, Cheung Chau, Lamma Island, among others, to the west of Hong Kong, and to enclave villages in the Tolo Harbour, Double Haven, Port Shelter, etc. in eastern New Territories.
Lee Lai-Shan, popularly known as "San San", was born in Cheung Chau and started windsurfing aged 12.

There is a monument resembling a windsurf board and mast erected in her honour near the beachfront at Cheung Chau.
