After a few years in Lund, he undertook (1750–51) a scientific expedition to the Netherlands and France, after which he initially wanted to go as a missionary to the Khoikhoi people of South Africa or to the Lenape native Americans of Pennsylvania.
Within the township's boundaries is the old village of Goshen which was one of the settlements of the Christian Munsee.

Following the Gnadenhutten massacre near present day Gnadenhutten, Ohio, on March 8, 1782, a group of surviving Christian Munsees left that area led by Moravian missionary David Zeisberger, eventually reestablishing their community in what is today southern Ontario Canada.
