Murray lived in numerous places on the continent over the next years, and died in Medemblik, Holland, on 11 October 1760, at the age of 66.
His lineage was descended from the royal Stewarts through the ubiquitous clan of Murray.

She is notable as a member of the Clan Murray, largely pro-Jacobite in sympathies at this time (her mother Amelia's father and brother both supported that cause), but also including pro-Hanoverians such as William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield.
Despite their name, this Murray family were not part of the Clan Murray in Atholl but were in fact a sept of the Clan Sutherland, whose chiefs were the Earls of Sutherland.
A member of Clan Murray headed by the Duke of Atholl, he was the son of the Reverend Charles Murray, Rector of Kirby Knowle, Yorkshire, and Mabel (née Umfreville).
