American Kantorei is the performing group for the Baroque musical series Bach at the Sem on the campus of Concordia Seminary in suburban St. Louis, MO.

Schalk graduated in 1952 from Concordia University Chicago (then known as Concordia Teachers College River Forest) with a B.S. in education and proceeded to earn a M.Mus from the Eastman School of Music and an M.A.R. from Concordia Seminary in Saint Louis.
In addition, he held an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary, an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the Philippine Christian University in Manila, The Philippines.
His son, J. A. O. Preus III, was a professor at Concordia Seminary and is the past president of Concordia University in Irvine, California.
