She is known in the bodybuilding world for her artistic style of posing which involves modern and belly dancing, classic lines and symmetry which are often compared with those from the female bodybuilders from the late 1970s and early 1980s such as Cory Everson and Anja Langer.
Her best showing came in 1987, when she finished second behind Cory Everson.
On November 24, 1990, Murray succeeded six-time champion Cory Everson to become Ms. Olympia, a title Murray would hold for most of the following decade.
Tracey would buy copies of Muscle & Fitness and would see pictures of early bodybuilders such as Cory Everson, Tonya Knight, and Rachel McLish.
She was also inspired by the magazines with well known female bodybuilders as Lenda Murray, Cory Everson and Juliette Bergmann on their covers.
