It is named after the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
In the mid-1990s they met at the Cranbrook School orchestra practice room with Glass a year ahead playing piano and cello, and Stracey playing violin and clarinet.
Crabb graduated from Texas State University–San Marcos in 1997 and then got an MFA in Photography and Performance from Cranbook Academy of Art in 1999.
In October 2008, Dietz was named chief marketing officer for Cranbrook Educational Community, a collection of private schools and educational instiutitions in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
She studied with Carl Milles in the summer of 1942 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan), with Simon Moselsio from 1942 to 1943 at Bennington College (Bennington, Vermont), with Raymond Puccinelli from 1943 to 1945 at the University of California, Berkeley, with Oronzio Maldarelli from 1945 to 1946 at Columbia University (New York City) and with Ossip Zadkine in Paris from 1949 to 1950.

He graduated from Lamar College, attended Cranbrook Educational Community and served with the Seabees on Guadalcanal during World War II, but was active as a sculptor before the war.
