2 unusual facts about Cryptanalysis

Code Breakers

Cryptanalysis, the science of analyzing information systems to study the hidden aspects

Hugh Mendes

He was born in the British Military Hospital in Hostert, Germany, where his mother was a nurse, and his father was serving as a code-breaker.

Burke Marshall

He joined the army, working in the intelligence corps as a Japanese translator and cryptoanalyst.

Cicco Simonetta

It was only a century later that a scientific treatise entirely devoted to cryptanalysis was written by the French mathematician François Viète.

Cipher

Abraham Sinkov, Elementary Cryptanalysis: A Mathematical Approach, Mathematical Association of America, 1966.

Clandestine operation

In World War II, targets found through cryptanalysis of radio communication, were attacked only if there had been aerial reconnaissance in the area, or, in the case of the shootdown of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, where the sighting could be attributed to the Coastwatchers.

CryptGenRandom

A cryptanalysis of CryptGenRandom, published in November 2007 by Leo Dorrendorf and others from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and University of Haifa, found significant weaknesses in the Windows 2000 implementation of the algorithm.

David A. Wagner

1999 Invention of the slide attack, a new form of cryptanalysis (with Alex Biryukov); also the boomerang attack and mod n cryptanalysis (the latter with Bruce Schneier and John Kelsey).

Foyle's War

Later in the seventh series, Sam has a new love interest, Adam Wainwright, played by Max Brown, a former Bletchley Park codebreaker who proposes to her in that series' final episode.

John R. Redman

Redman rejected Captain Joseph Rochefort's accurate analysis of the intercepted Japanese messages that ultimately led to the successful Battle of Midway, and he subsequently played a role in Rochefort's ejection from cryptanalysis in the months that followed.

John Tiltman

Tiltman undertook an analysis of the ancient manuscript himself, and then in the 1970s he assigned an NSA cryptanalyst named Mary D'Imperio to take over the Voynich cryptanalysis, when Friedman's health began to fail.

Matt Robshaw

Robshaw's notable work includes the cryptanalysis of a number of cryptographic primitives, including the extension of linear cryptanalysis to use multiple approximations, and the design of the block ciphers Crab and RC6.

Random number generator attack

In November 2007, Leo Dorrendorf et al. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and University of Haifa published a paper titled Cryptanalysis of the Random Number Generator of the Windows Operating System.

United States Naval Computing Machine Laboratory

All told, the laboratory constructed 121 bombes which were then employed for code-breaking in the US Navy's signals intelligence and cryptanalysis group OP-20-G in Washington, D.C..

VEST

The authors say that VEST security margins are inline with the guidelines proposed by Lars Knudsen in the paper "Some thoughts on the AES process" and the more conservative guidelines recently proposed by Nicolas Courtois in the paper “Cryptanalysis of Sfinks”.
