In 1963 he married the architectural historian Alexandra Gordon Clark (known as Sandra), daughter of the judge and crime novelist, Alfred Gordon Clark.
His eldest daughter, Barbara, married Alfred Gordon Clark, a county court judge and crime writer as Cyril Hare, and his second daughter, Anne, was the mother of Rose Gray, of The River Cafe.
The detective story writer Cyril Hare was born in Mickleham in 1900 and lived from 1951 until his death in 1958 in Westhumble, at Berry's Croft opposite Cleveland Lodge.
