In 1856, Wheelock was part of a rescue party Brigham Young sent to assist the stranded pioneer companies including the Martin Handcart Company near the Sweetwater River.
His parents were William Henry Rattenberry (1834-1889) and Mary Ann Broomhead (c. 1829-1909), a former wife of notable Mormon missionary Cyrus H. Wheelock.

Wheelock came to the National Gallery of Art in 1973 as the "David E. Finley Fellow", and later he was also named the research curator.
Wheelock is sharing pictures of the Earth, station and views of space via Twitter, as Soichi Noguchi did before him.

He became the first person to "check in" from space October 22, using the mobile social networking application Foursquare.
He taught at Haverford College, Harvard University, the College of the City of New York, Brooklyn College, Cazenovia Junior College, the Darrow School for Boys, the University of Toledo, and Florida Presbyterian College.
His mother Doris lent the medal to U.S. Army officer and NASA astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock to take on his June 2010 launch to the International Space Station.
